In three decades of fixed asset work, I have watched most organizations keep their asset information in three places: software, spreadsheets and people. The system holds the register. The spreadsheets hold the projects, the reconciliations and the exceptions. The people hold the reasons. Those three rarely meet.
That used to be survivable, because the people stayed. With accounting turnover rising, the understanding and know-how behind the register is walking out the door, and what is left is a register that balances and a team that can no longer say why.
