The problem
Sage Fixed Assets' Bulk Edit is a genuinely useful tool, and if all you need is a new method or life on a group of assets, use it. It doesn't reach salvage value, Section 179 or the beginning and current accumulated depreciation fields. Sage support confirms salvage value can only be updated one asset at a time unless Sage's own team does it, and a user with 150 assets needing Section 179 was pointed to the same paid service.
What we update in bulk
- Salvage value, usually alongside a life or method change after a policy review.
- Section 179 elections applied to a group of qualifying assets in the tax book.
- Beginning date, beginning YTD and beginning accumulated depreciation, for assets converted from another system or carried forward after a mid-life takeover.
- Current accumulated depreciation and current-thru date, where a prior system or a partial run left the numbers out of agreement with the general ledger.
- Method and life together with the fields above, so one coordinated change replaces several partial ones.
Each change is validated against the asset's other critical fields first, and the before-and-after report by book is ready for the GL and the tax workpapers.
How the work is delivered
There are two ways to use the Critical Field Updater. Most clients start with a done-for-you project: you send the asset list and the new values, we agree on the effective-date rule for each group of assets, run a validation pass, make the changes, and hand back a before-and-after report by book that your team and your auditors can tie out. Clients who face these changes every quarter can run the same tool themselves through FAHA, our fixed asset platform, which connects to Sage Fixed Assets and keeps an audit trail of every change and who approved it.
Either way, every project starts with a full company backup in Sage Fixed Assets, and nothing is written until the validation report has been reviewed by a person on your side.
Frequently asked questions
Should we just use Bulk Edit?
If the only fields changing are depreciation method and estimated life, yes, Bulk Edit is the right tool and costs you nothing extra. Talk to us when salvage, Section 179, dates, values or accumulated depreciation are part of the change.
Can Section 179 be applied to assets from a prior year?
That is a tax question before it is a software one, and the answer depends on your returns and elections. We apply what your tax adviser decides and document it by asset.
Can you load beginning accumulated depreciation for converted assets?
Yes. It is one of the most common reasons clients call, especially when a conversion left the beginning fields empty or in the wrong book.
